VACATION SCHEMES

Our vacation schemes are the perfect opportunity for you to experience life with our firm. You’ll spend two weeks with us and, although some of your time will be about you getting to know what we do and who we work with, you’ll have plenty of time to get to know our trainees, associates and partners too.

GET A TRAINING CONTRACT

At Clyde & Co, we recruit our trainees exclusively via our vacation schemes. As we recruit two years in advance for our training contracts, you should start applying for a vacation scheme in the second year of a law degree or the third year of a non-law degree. We offer training contracts in our Edinburgh and Glasgow offices.

When your vacation scheme comes to an end, if you’ve enjoyed your time with us and shown us you have real potential, we’ll interview you for a training contract which will start two years later.

YOUR CAREER

If you’re keen to embark on a career in law, a vacation scheme with us could be the perfect stepping stone. These two weeks will give you a real insight into Clyde & Co Scotland, the opportunity to learn about how the law is applied in our core industry sectors and we’ll always aim to enable you to be placed in the department of your choice.

That’s not all…

At the end of your vacation scheme, if you decide you want to join us, we’ll run an interview there and then. We’ll ask why you want to join us and what you think you can offer – especially given that you’d got to know us. We’ll ask for feedback from our teams too.

HOW WE SUPPORT YOU

Throughout your time with us, you can expect unrivalled training and support. You’ll have a dedicated buddy on hand to help you over the two weeks – and beyond. You’ll also receive guidance from a senior fee earner along with coaching and support from our early careers team – especially when it comes to your training contract interviews.

HOW TO APPLY

You’ll need to apply online – the sooner you apply the better as we only have a limited number of spaces and we recruit all of our trainees from this programme. You can apply to join us on a vacation scheme from between September 19th 2022 and January 2nd 2023. Read on for more details.

You’ll need to apply online from September 20th 2022 onwards for your chosen scheme. We’ll ask you to fill in your personal details, tell us about any previous work experience, and you will then need to complete a short video assessment to answer a number of questions about why you’d like to join our firm, and this programme in particular. We’ll also want to know about your commercial awareness.

Do well, and you’ll be invited along to a virtual assessment centre. You’ll have a 60 minute interview, undertake a group exercise and meet our trainees– the perfect opportunity to ask them any questions you may have about our firm.

You’ll find out the outcome of your application within four weeks of the application deadline closing.

If you attend an assessment centre and are successful, we’ll let you know within two weeks if not sooner. From there, our early careers team will be in touch to help you prepare for the scheme.

The scheme itself will see you undertaking a number of exercises and meeting people from across the firm. You’ll also have the opportunity to be interviewed for a training contract.

Your assessments will consist of a variety of different exercises to assess your performance in a range of situations which may include a group scenario, written exercise and interview. The exercises are timed, which means you are being assessed in your capacity to work under pressure, work in a team, manage your time, and think on your feet and use your analytical skills under pressure. Be prepared to talk about your application. If you've talked about an area of law you're interested on, be prepared to engage on this topic and make sure you've really research the firm and the work we do.

No preparation is needed in advance, but we will be looking to assess the following across the exercises:

  • Communication skills
  • Teamwork
  • Commercial Awareness

BEFORE STARTING THE APPLICATION PROCESS

Spend time researching the firm, but you can only learn so much from websites. Attend law fairs, dinners, insight days and other in-house events to get a real feel and culture for the firms you’re applying to.

Ahead of law fairs and events, make sure you prepare some intelligent questions to ask. We take note of individuals who have impressed with good questions.

Take the time to read through the application form, establish what each question is asking and plan your responses accordingly. This is an excellent opportunity to draw upon your previous experience and show us your personality.

Tailor your application form and be specific. If you can replace Clyde & Co with another firm’s name and the answer still applies, this isn’t specific enough.
